Summer Baby Outfit
Today’s freebie vintage pattern is a Baby’s Cap and Sack (Sacque) for summer. This isn’t a pattern but instead it’s sewing instructions. It starts with an 18 inch square of fabric. For some reason they suggest flannel, maybe because it’s soft, but not sure about using it for summer time.
A perfect cover up for baby on a warm summer day. Easy to follow instructions are below plus simple embroidery stitches to decorate them.
The cap and sack sewing instructions are a page from a Star Needlework Journal dated 1925, Volume 10 No. 3 to be exact. It was only 40 cents for a one year subscription according to the form within the magazine. It was published quarterly, January, April, July and October by the American Thread Company.
Embroidery Stitches
Also added to the baby cap and sack are some embroidery stitches. The Feather Stitch and a Rambler Rose Embroidery Stitch.
The designer uses Feather stitches to finish the edges and little Rambler Roses for decoration. Below you’ll find several links and a YouTube video on how to embroider a Rambler Rose.
Here’s a little closer image of the embroidery placement, but the Rambler Roses can be embroidered wherever you’d like.
Sewing Instructions
I haven’t done a PDF file for this post so follow the download instructions below to save or print for later.
Download Instructions: Right-Click on the image. Select either “save link as” or “save image as” depending on what browser you are using. Or simply click on it, it will open in a new window and save or print it from there.
Silkline Art Thread
The embroider materials are skeins of The American Thread Company’s “Silkline” Art Thread, Article 50. It is a six strand thread that came in a variety of colors. As far as colors go, I haven’t been able to find an American Thread color number chart. So the color choice would be up to you.

How to Embroider a Rambler Rose
Over on Mary Corbet’s Needle ‘n Thread blog, she has a post for a Stem Stitch Rose. It’s very pretty.
The tutorial is easy to follow and detailed. Explore her blog if you’re interested in embroidery. She has some great info there.
Next is a Woven or Wagon Wheel Stitch Tutorial on the Flamingo Toes blog. It’s a Woven Rose Tutorial. Also very pretty. You may have seen some of the wonderful hoop embroidery patterns from Bev at Flamingo Toes.
And last but not least is a YouTube video from Dazak Arts to watch:
