Mint Julep Summer Afghan Knitting Pattern

What a sweet summer afghan pattern in the Coats and Clark’s Book No. 268, titled Afghans For All Occasions. Great for lounging in a beach chair near the lake or pool.

This striped afghan measures 42 x 60 inches. The colors are gorgeous, Turquoise, Mint Julep and Eggshell, perfect for summer.

Turquoise Summer Striped Afghan Knitting Pattern yarn requirements

The Red Heart Worsted Hand Knitting Yarn is a 4 ply Acrylic that is machine washable and dryable. These vintage skeins weighed 3.5 ounces each.

The Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo skeins weigh a lot more than 3.5 ounces, in fact they weigh 14 ounces. You’d need two for a total of 28 ounces of the dark turquoise color. The Mint Julep only requires 7 and Eggshell 3 ounces.

Circular Needles

It’s made with 36″ long, Size No. 10 Circular Needles. You’ll need a Size I crochet hook for the edging. A circular needle is recommended to accommodate the large number of sts. Don’t join. Work in rows.

These Knitter’s Pride 10/6mm Dreamz Fixed Circular Needles are 40″ long and have a 5 star rating on Amazon. The Dreamz line is made from densified laminated birch wood, more costly and much harder than ebony or rosewood.

Let’s Look at the Gauge

Using a Garter Stitch — 11 sts = 3 inches; 8 rows = 1 inch. Always be sure to check your gauge before starting the afghan. Then use any size needle that will obtain the gauge above.

Hi Debra- hope you’re feeling well, I know you’ve been through some trying times with your health. I send my prayers to you, & good wishes 🙂

A while back, I asked about books or anything on embroidery on handkerchiefs- do you remember? Anyway- I FOUND exactly the kind of thing I was in want of, and it’s this: “Embroidery, Monograms, Initials and Handkerchiefs, Book No. 11, by Anne Orr” (Ive searched thriftbooks, Amazon, eBay and online pub. domain book sites no one has it) but I wanted to show that to you, so you would know what I was talking about 😉 that book(let) specifically deals with handkerchiefs. Wish me luck in finding a copy!

God bless- PS I love these little patterns you share each week or so. They’re such a feel-good kinda thing!!

I’m doing very well. Staying home but getting outside and walking. I do find that I get tired a lot more easily than I used to though.
Love Anne Orr books. Hope you find it. I’ll be on the look out for it too.
      Take care.

Thank you- I do pray and hope your health is improving. I went through a very tough time when I was on “treatment” years ago- I’ll never forget it. It is so good of you to come on to post these patterns. It must take a lot out of you to work at it! I could barely type replies to emails when I was sick, let alone keep a blog!!
I’ll be on the lookout for that booklet too- I can find book number 10, book number 12, but not that “Book No. 11”!
