Granny Square

Granny Afghan Crochet Pattern ~ There are several different variations of granny afghan crochet patterns on the internet, but I really like this one. It’s the classic multi-color on black.

In an earlier post, I shared a similar granny afghan pattern. It’s from a Virginia Snow’s pattern booklet, but all the photos are in black and white. Fortunately, this one is in color.

Bear Brands Fleisher Yarns

The color key chart below states the materials are Bear Brand Deluxe Knitting Worsted or Fleisher’s Superior Knitting Worsted.

VintageKnits.com has a listing of Bear Brand yarns and their specifics. It helps to find a substitute when you know what the discontinued yarns contents are. As-well-as knowing the length of each skein so you’ll know how many are needed to finish your project.

The Deluxe Knitting Worsted skeins came in 57 grams or 2 ounces with 170 yards. The Superior Knitting Worsted skeins were 4 ounces with 270 yards. Both of these were a medium weight yarn.

Since these vintage yarns are no longer available, except sometimes on websites like Ebay and Etsy, I found a couple substitutes on Amazon.

The first is Lily Sugar n’ Cream. A medium weight worsted yarn made of 100% cotton and comes in a 6 pack of colors.

Another substitute medium weight yarn is Red Heart Super Saver Acrylic. Lots of color choices with this one.
