Granny Square Afghan
You’ve seen them on the back of couches at Grandma’s, on TV and in movies. It’s a colorful Granny Square crocheted afghan. With this pattern you can crochet your own version.
This pattern uses at least 20 different colors with a solid black background. I wish this photo in the booklet was in color so we could see all the wonderful colors.
These afghans started out as a way to use your yarn scraps, but they have turned into a favorite. Especially the traditional one in this booklet with a black edge around each block and a multitude of colors in the middle.
Here’s just a small snippet of Granny Square Afghans on Google images:
Virginia Snow Studios
I’ve done a post on another pattern from this booklet. A Rainbow Bolster Pillow and Afghan. It’s oh so pretty and uses the same type of yarns as this crochet pattern.
If you visit that post, I go into some detail about the Virginia Snow Studios and add a link to the Illinois Quilt History website that has a post on their history.
The stated size for this afghan is 12 x 16 blocks and each block is 4 inches so if my math is correct (and it may not be) 48 x 64 inches. To crochet this size you’ll need 192 blocks.
The fourth row or edge of each block uses black yarn so that when they are whipped stitched together it will be surrounding all the beautiful colors.
Information and Color Chart on Yarns
The yarn is no longer available but with these ads and charts included in the booklet, it will help make choosing a substitute easier.
Download Instructions: Right-Click on the image. Select either “save link as” or “save image as” depending on what browser you are using. Or simply click on it, it will open in a new window and save it from there.
Antique Granny Afghan
They are calling this pattern ANTIQUE. Unfortunately, I don’t have the cover to this particular booklet so I’m not sure of the date. A guess would be the 1920’s, so if they thought this pattern was antique then, I guess it would be antique++ now.

The pattern is in PDF format so to read it you’ll need the Adobe Reader software on your computer. Most computers come with it, but it is free and can be found here.
