Free Knitting Pattern for Childrens Mittens

Welcome to this Friday’s VTNS (Vintage Textile and Needlework Sellers) Fan Freebie!

Do you remember a pair of mittens your mom or grandmother knit for you when you were young? Sure you could go pick up a pair at the nearest discount store, but continue the tradition and knit a pair for the little ones in your family. There’s something special about a pair of mittens knit with love.

Use this sweet vintage knitting pattern for a child’s pair of mittens. Since these are small, your project will go quickly and use less yarn. Children can never have too many mittens.

These mittens will keep little hands toasty warm in the winter. Even if you live where it’s warm, they’d be a nice gift for little ones living in an area where it gets cold and snows.

The pattern calls for Bear Brand DeLuxe Knitting Worsted, 100% Wool, 4-ply, 2 ounces. This yarn is discontinued, today’s 4-ply yarn is considered a medium weight. A Red Heart yarn from your local store could be substituted, but sometimes you can find this type of vintage yarn sold on the internet.

Just make sure you find a yarn that matches the gauge listed and you should be fine. These mittens have a Gauge of 6 sts = 1 inch, 8 rows = 1 inch with Size 4 Knitting Needles.

The pattern is for size 2 and changes for size 4 are in parentheses. Here is the children’s mitten pattern. You can also download the PDF file below to save for later.
