Chic Checks You Can Cross Stitch
This vintage leaflet has patterns and instructions for three different aprons. These original designs are for embroidered gingham aprons. It’s cross stitch on gingham fabric or Chicken Scratch.
My favorite of the three is this one:
Boy that’s the truth. Everyone likes to gather in the kitchen. Work this pattern in cross stitch for a nice framed sampler. Next is a pretty set of leaves on a branch that glide across the apron.
Save and print these patterns for later. Simply click on it, it will open in a new window and there you can save or print it. Also there’s a PDF file below you can download.
Embroidered Gingham Aprons
This is a Coats & Clark’s leaflet that was advertised in Redbook. No date, but could be 1950’s or 60’s. The instructions require six strand floss and a No. 7 embroidery needle. If you’re interested in more information on this type of cross stitch take a look at this previous post How To Do Chicken Scratch Embroidery.

please help me find chicken craft designs that are very elabrit. more than just plan chicken scratch. i will be for ever in your debt. thank you
Hi Mary, I only have a few chicken scratch designs. The ones I have I’ve already shared. I’d try doing a search on Google and checking out the images that come up, similar to this one: Google Chicken Scratch Image Search. Also if you’ve never been on Pinterest, go to their website and search, I know you’ll find many designs there as well. Hope that helps. Thanks for your comment.
Debra
Hi Debra! I hope the holidays are finding you in good spirits. I am in a rush, trying to get last minute gifts out of the way.
The booklet art design looks like (very) early 1960s or mid- to late-’50s. See how it’s kind of hip, modern? The color scheme, letter type, wouldn’t have even been imagined yet in the ’40s. Actually, I would place my bet on 1960, on account of the dull green and citrus orange scheme which was a big hit around then. I wasn’t born yet (but wish I was!) but I am a big fan of design from that era.
Merry Christmas !
Doing well. Most of my Christmas shopping is done so I can enjoy the next week, baking cookies and spending time with family. I originally had 1950’s to 60’s for that very reason but then I saw the book on Gingham Aprons of the 40’s and 50’s and over thought it. I changed it back.
Thanks for the comment.
Merry Christmas to you too!
