Raglan Sleeved Turtle Neck Sweater
What could be more 1950’s than a turtle neck sweater. This knitting pattern has instructions to knit one in boys sizes 4 through 12.
Superbowl LIII will be played this weekend so when I saw this cute photo of a boy holding a football, I was all in on this knitting pattern.

The booklet is dated 1959 and is a Coats and Clark’s Book No. 106. Quick and Easy Bulky Knits for the Family.
On the inside cover page –>> Beat the Drum for Bulkies! ….bulky sweaters have taken the fashion world by storm! Men, women and children — all love to wear these comfortable cozy sweaters that have such interesting textures and fit so casually but so well.
I’d have to say, they have not gone out of style and are probably just as much in fashion today as they were in the 1950’s.
Washing Bulky Sweaters
A tip for washing bulky sweaters is in the booklet that I’m sure can be applied to today as well.
Dissolve mild soap flakes in lukewarm water. Place garment in soapy water and squeeze very gently. Rinse several times in clear cool water without raising garment from water. Remove from water, supporting garment with both hands. Place on turkish towel to dry, patting into original shape. Allow to dry on towel.
Caution: Do Not Wash In Washing Machine, Do Not Use Detergents, Do Not Hang Up To Dry
Of course, with the wonderful new HE washing machines there may be a setting for these types of sweaters, but I’d probably still feel safer washing by hand. After all that work knitting it I certainly wouldn’t want anything to happen to it.
Knitting Pattern
There are instructions for a plain round neckline if you’d rather have that instead of a turtle neck. You can see that and the measurements for the sizes on the first page of the pattern. You’ll find it as-well-as a PDF file of the entire pattern below.
What Yarn to Use
The yarn named in this knitting pattern is Turbo Knit. It was a blend of 60% Nylon and 40% Wool. It came in 2 ounce skeins with 63 yards each. An Extra Bulky Weight yarn that we call now Super Bulky.
I looked up some Bulky yarns and those great big rolls of Super Chunky Yarn for Arm Knitting came up.
Those will not work for this pattern. 🙂
But there are plenty of other bulky yarns out there that will.
One of them is Red Heart Super Saver Chunky
