Bread Tray Ruffle
A lovely addition to your dining room table, a pretty Bread Tray Ruffle. This crochet pattern has an oval linen center that is hemmed. Then you crochet a row of single crochet all around to start the ruffle.
The piece of linen oval is 10¾ by 5 inches. Plus you have an option of a round doily with a linen center 7½ inches in diameter.
American Thread Co
You’d find many ruffled doilies in the decor of the 1940’s and the American Thread Company did not disappoint by providing crochet patterns for ruffled doilies. As a matter of fact, this pattern came from a 1948 Star Book 59 titled Ruffled Doilies.
You’ll need Mercerized Crochet Cotton in Size 50. This is a very fine thread. The higher the size number the thinner the thread.
There’s a good post explaining crochet thread sizes and the correct hooks to use with them on The Spruce Crafts website: Understanding Crochet Thread Sizes
Herrschner’s has DMC Cordonnet Special Size 50 Crochet Thread in white and ecru.
Abbreviations and Starching
The chart below includes the crochet abbreviations for the pattern as-well-as suggestions for starching doilies using starch and water.
Another Bread Tray Doily Pattern
I’ve posted another crochet pattern for a bread tray doily. This one is a little different. Using filet crochet it spells out the word BREAD at the bottom of the doily where the linen would be in this one. The edges don’t have as many ruffles but it’s a nice edge.
