Bernat’s Handicrafter
Lacy Knit Top Knitting Pattern from 1947 ~
This lovely lacy knit top is a pattern from a Bernat’s Handicrafter magazine by Emile Bernat & Sons Company. It’s Volume XVI Number 3 and the copyright is 1947.
This is the cover. Mine is a little worse for wear. The cover has fallen off and there are several rips and tears, but still very readable.
I couldn’t even find one for sale right now, which was disappointing because it has some lovely tops in it. As you can see from the Contents page below.
I chose this Lacy Beauty for today’s freebie vintage pattern. It’s a dressy pullover made with Bernat Boucle de Laine yarn.
Boucle de Laine yarn is 71% wool, 29% rayon. The skeins were 1 ounce and 150 yards. The yarn is in a Light Weight category in today’s terminology. A good substitute is Super Fine or Fine such as sock, fingering, and baby.
The definition of Boucle is a yarn with a looped or curled ply, or fabric woven from this yarn. Like the Handicrafter book, I didn’t find many vintage skeins of this yarn for sale either.
Hints for Better Knitting
So to help with the guage, size, etc., this page from the book, “Hints For Better Knitting” will help choose a correct substitute.
The pattern has instructions for Size 14 and changes in parentheses for Sizes 16 and 18, so this Selection for the Proper Size will be helpful, especially since 1947 sizes are much different than today’s.
