Basket Crochet Pattern

Imagine this party basket filled with colorful candies or jelly beans. It has a beautiful flowing top edge and a handle with a ribbon accent. This vintage crochet pattern includes instructions on how to stiffen the basket too.

This pretty basket pattern comes from a 1943 Hand Crochet by Royal Society Book No. 1.

What Crochet Thread Should I Use?

I’ve scoured the internet trying to find the discontinued Royal Society Eversheen crochet thread or even some information on it, but came up short. I do know the balls came in 400 yard lengths.

The best I can say is to use a lace weight thread as a substitute. Probably a Size 10 to 30 crochet cotton. These thread sizes are the ones usually used for delicate doilies and other dainty crocheted items.

Unfortunately, no gauge is stated for use with a Steel Crochet Hook Size 4. I guess if it makes up a little bigger or smaller that’s okay.

I did find an ad for Royal Society’s Two Ply and Cordichet Six-Cord Crochet Cotton. Each gives a pretty good description if you come across any vintage crochet patterns using these threads.
